Heartbreak|Luangpu Pramote Pamojjo

Translated by Shi Ne Ling

No one stays angry forever.
Some people,
after a breakup, say,
“Oh, I was heartbroken for an entire year.”
That is not really true.

Who here has ever had a broken heart?
Raise your hand.
Anyone?
Come on, be brave.
Good.
At least you have some experience of life.
Better to have loved and lost
than never to have loved at all.

The first heartbreak can hurt for a long time.
Can you feel it?
It hurts for a long time.

Sometimes the world appears dark and empty.
It feels as though the bird in your heart will never sing again,
and that you will remain sad for the rest of your life.

Like Li Xunhuan—
(the protagonist of Gu Long’s novel)
do you know him?
That’s just a story.
No one stays sad like that forever.

Have you noticed?
After a heartbreak,
you feel sad only when you think about it.
The moment the mind goes to something else,
the sadness is gone.

Imagine someone walking down the street
with a broken heart,
like a character in a music video,
singing a sad song in the rain,
indulging in the sadness,
almost relishing it.
Sad, yet somehow savoring the sorrow.

But the moment a mad dog comes charging toward you,
the sadness disappears at once.

Do you see?
The sadness is there
because the mind is thinking about that story.

Therefore, even grief, sorrow,
and every kind of suffering
cannot last.
They are all impermanent.
