The heart of Dhamma practice lies in this:
How can we awaken?
How can true awareness arise within us?

If there is no awareness,
no matter which meditation object one uses,
at best, it leads only to samatha bhāvanā.
At worst, it turns into mere forcing and suppression,
tormenting both body and mind—
that’s all it amounts to.

Therefore,
this awareness is the essence,
the very heart of the practice.
One must learn to be aware,
develop this awareness,
bring up this awareness,
and awaken first.
