Delusion (moha) is the master of all defilements.
There can be no greed (rāga) without delusion.
There can be no anger (dosa) without delusion.
Delusion can arise on its own,
or together with greed,
or together with anger.
Therefore, whenever a defilement arises,
delusion is always present.

Delusion is being lost,
not knowing the truth,
lacking wisdom,
not seeing the true nature of rūpa-nāma — body and mind.

When pleasure arises in the mind,
greed sneaks in.
When pain arises in the mind,
anger sneaks in.
In truth, whenever the mind experiences happiness,
greed and delusion sneak in.
When the mind experiences suffering,
anger and delusion sneak in.
They always arise together in this way.

Delusion is being lost.
If we are not lost,
defilements cannot arise.
Grasp this principle well:
If we are not lost,
if mindfulness (sati) is present,
defilements absolutely cannot arise.

Therefore,
we develop mindfulness —
not by seeking ways to defeat defilements,
but by cultivating our own mindfulness.

When mindfulness arises,
defilements cease automatically.
Therefore, we do not practice in order to eradicate defilements;
we practice in order to cultivate mindfulness.
The very moment mindfulness arises,
defilements fall away automatically.

Thus, there are no defilements to eliminate.
When mindfulness arises,
they fall away automatically.

Thus, what we must train
is sati—mindfulness.
